Each year in April we welcome two brand new Golf Captains to Carden Park. We recently caught up with Nigel Dick, who took the position of men’s Golf Captain of 2018 to find out a few fun facts…
So Nigel, how did you get into golf and when did you start playing golf?
I played a bit of golf as a boy, receiving some tuition on the basics, but as I began my career and started a family I only played very occasional social or business related Golf. When I moved to Cheshire some 20 years ago, with children departing and a more settled work environment I joined Carden Park playing regularly in the weekend competitions, and then later with the COBS.
With plenty of golfers to choose from, who is your favourite? Do you take inspiration from anybody?
I thought Sandy Lyle had a great swing, and more recently Justin Rose has impressed me with how he became a world leading golfer after a difficult start to his professional career. My golf has never got beyond the “Happy Hacker” level so clearly inspiration has passed me by.
What is your most memorable moment during a game?
I’ve been lucky to have had 2 hole in ones. One in Portugal and one on the 15th hole on the Cheshire. A hole in one is a pure fluke, but certainly memorable.
What is your favourite hole to play at Carden Park?
I think there are a number of really challenging holes on the Cheshire course, particularly off the back tees. I would mention the 6th, 9th, 12th, 16th and 17th as memorable and difficult holes where a par or better is a great achievement.
Hope House is the chosen membership charity this year, is there a particular reason you chose this charity?
I wanted to choose a local charity providing important and practical help where I think our support will be really appreciated.
And finally, with the captain’s charity golf day on the 31st July, do you have any tips for the perfect game?
My recommendation is always not to get wound up when the game is not going great. Quite often the case for me. Just enjoy the fabulous scenery of the Carden Courses, the good company, the banter, and the occasional memorable shot that keeps bringing you back.
